Curriculum

Module 1 – Anaesthesia and ICM

Provides an overview and introduction to anaesthesia. This module is particularly suited to a doctor undertaking an attachment to anaesthesia during early training. The topic areas covered are: 1. The Operating Theatre Environment 2. Basic Science for Novice Trainees 3. Anaesthetic Equipment for Novice Trainees 4. Preoperative Assessment and Management 5. Induction of Anaesthesia and Intraoperative Management 6. Postoperative Management 7. Critical Incidents and Management of Cardiac Arrest

Module 2 – General Concepts of ICM

Provides an overview of the general aspects of clinical intensive care medicine that are not specific to a particular disease or patient group. The topic areas covered are: 1. Identification of the Critically Ill Patient 2. Organ Support 3. Nutrition and Fluid Therapy 4. Analgesia and Sedation 5. The Costs and Unwanted Effects of Critical Care 6. End of Life Care 7. Transfer Medicine

Module 3 – Medicine and Surgery for ICM

This module describes the wide spectrum of disease that presents to a critical care unit. It gives an overview of pathologies, which have been classified by medical and surgical specialty: 1. Module 4 – Infectious Disease and ICM

Provides an overview of the prevention and treatment of infectious disease within intensive care medicine. This module explores the syndrome of sepsis and common disease states caused by infection. It also gives an overview of common causative pathogens encountered in intensive care medicine: 1. Common Pathogens 2. Infectious Diseases 3. Sepsis 4. Treatment and Control of Infection

Module 5 – Trauma

Provides an introduction to the management of trauma and an overview of traumatic injuries: 1. Major Incidents 2. Trauma Resuscitation 3. Traumatic Injuries

Module 6 – Procedures, Monitoring and Investigations in ICM

Gives a practical overview of common procedures within critical care. It also looks at resources to aid in the interpretation of commonly requested investigations, including imaging studies. Monitoring is discussed, both from a general viewpoint but also, more specifically, monitoring the cardiovascular system and intracranial pressure: 1. Procedures 2. Investigations 3. Monitoring

Module 7 – Patient Safety in ICM

This module explores critical incidents and emergencies, safe blood transfusion, prescribing, procedures and situations which may result in an unsafe critical care environment: 1. Blood Transfusion 2. 'First Do No Harm' 3. Critical Incidents and Emergencies

Module 8 – Non-clinical Topics for ICM

Provides an introduction to the non-clinical aspects of intensive care medicine. The topic areas covered are: 1. Research and Audit 2. Clinical Governance 3. Non-Technical Skills 4. The Law and ICM

Module 9 – Self-assessment

Includes a collection of multiple choice questions associated with the content found in modules 1 to 9.

Pathway: New to the Intensive Care Unit

This new e-ICM learning pathway brings together sessions which introduce key concepts and terminology regarding the care of critically ill patients. It provides an initial grounding for learners to explore the many other topics within e-ICM. These sessions are of benefit to doctors, advanced critical care practitioners, nurses and allied health professionals.
